One of the most difficult parts of caring for a senior loved one is preparing for the possibility of medical emergencies. But unfortunately, emergencies do happen. Being prepared in advance can make emergencies less disruptive and make sure that you and your senior loved one have the things you need.
Having an emergency bag packed for your senior loved one will ensure that if they end up in the hospital for an extended period they have the things they need to be as comfortable as possible. You can have a senior home care provider help pack an emergency to go back for your senior loved one. And your senior loved one’s senior home care provider can make sure that the bag is always kept in an easily accessible place. Every senior’s emergency go back should contain:
Underwear And Socks
It’s a good idea to put enough underwear and clean socks in the bag to least for a week. In addition to regular socks it’s a good idea to put in some slipper socks or thick socks with gripper bottoms to prevent falls if your senior loved one can get up out of bed. If your senior loved one uses incontinence pads or incontinence underwear put some extra ones in the bag. Don’t depend on the hospital to provide them.
A Warm Robe
Your senior loved one may have to stay in a hospital gown during their stay but a warm cozy robe will provide some emotional comfort as well as warmth. Make sure the robe is roomy enough that your senior loved one will be able to slip it on and off easily if the medical staff need access to your senior loved one. You can put some pajamas in the bag if you want, but since your senior loved one may not be able to wear them definitely include a robe.
Toiletries
A toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap should be in the bag. But you should also put in a large package of baby wipes for quick clean ups, plenty of lotion because your senior loved one will get dry skin, and a few tubes of lip balm to help their lips from moisturized. A hairbrush, facial moisturizer, and other toiletries that your senior loved one likes can help them feel less disoriented when they are in the hospital so you might want to include those as well.
A Warm Blanket And Pillow
Hospital blankets are never comfortable and often they are very thin. Put a warm blanket and a comfortable pillow in the bag so that your senior loved one will be comfortable in their room. Fleece blankets can be rolled up very small so they are easy to pack but they provide a lot of warmth. However, if your senior loved one has a special blanket that they love like a special quilt don’t bring that because there is always the possibility it will get lost at the hospital. Inexpensive fleece blankets are a great choice because they can be easily replaced but they are warm and cozy.
