Increase visibility by adding bright, energy-efficient LED bulbs in hallways, stairways, and other high-traffic areas. Brighter lighting is important, but so is lighting that is easier to access. If your mom has to walk down a dark hallway to find the light switch or walk into a dark bathroom and then fumble for the light switch she could fall in the dark.
Motion-activated lights are a great option for lighting in hallways, in the bathroom, and in the kitchen so that the lights will automatically go on when your mom walks by the light.
Install Lever-Style Door Handles
Replace traditional round door knobs with lever-style handles, which are easier to operate for seniors with limited hand strength or dexterity. It’s also much harder for your mom to lock herself in a room accidentally with a lever-style doorknob.
You can also add smart doorknobs to outside doors that have keycodes or fingerprint access entry. Those doors make it easier for your mom to get into the house because she won’t have to try and grip a key or turn the key in the lock. You can also assign a different key code to anyone who needs access to the house. That makes it very convenient for a home care provider to visit.
Use Raised Toilet Seats
Add a raised toilet seat or a toilet safety frame to make sitting down and standing up easier. This can help reduce strain and lower the risk that your mom will fall. Every year seniors at home fall when trying to lower themselves down onto a toilet or raise themselves up, sometimes falling and getting stuck between the toilet and the wall. A raised toilet seat can prevent that.
