When you’re taking care of a senior parent with Alzheimer’s figuring out what they’re feeling can be a bit of a guessing game. As the illness progresses your mom or dad won’t be able to recognize their own body’s signals for things like hunger, thirst, or being tired. It will be up to you, and their care provider if they have one, to figure out when your senior parent needs food, water, or sleep.
Alzheimer’s care at home can be a wonderful resource when you’re taking care of a senior parent with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s care gives you the time off you need to recharge. And, care providers that specialize in Alzheimer’s care at home can help you understand what your senior parent needs as their symptoms change.
Keeping your mom or dad on a strict routine for meals and bedtime should help them be hungry, thirsty, or tired around the same time each day. But watch out for these signs that your mom or dad is tired, and make sure that they get a nap or go to bed early if you notice them:
Increased Irritability or Frustration
A tired senior parent with Alzheimer’s may become more easily upset or show signs of frustration over minor issues. They might also express dissatisfaction with activities they usually enjoy.
So if you suggest watching a favorite TV show or movie after dinner and they are irritable, frustrated, or angry about it they are probably just tired and need to go to bed instead of watching TV or a movie.
Withdrawal from Activities
If your parent starts to lose interest in social interactions, hobbies, or even family gatherings, it could be a sign that they are feeling exhausted and need a break.
This is very common at family gatherings like holiday events or picnics in the summer. Anytime there are a lot of people around it’s going to take a lot of energy for your mom or dad to participate in conversations or keep up with what’s going on.
If they leave a conversation abruptly, go sit by themselves, or wander out of the room those are all signs they’re tired and need a break.
Difficulty Maintaining Focus
You may notice that they struggle to concentrate on conversations or tasks, frequently losing track of what they are doing or saying.
For example, if you are coloring or doing crafts with your mom or dad and they suddenly can’t focus on what they are doing or what you’re saying that is a cue to put the crafts away and try again later.
Yawning or Rubbing Eyes
Physical signs of fatigue, like yawning frequently, rubbing their eyes, or even nodding off, are clear indicators that they are tired. Just like children will get red-faced, whine, and rub their eyes when they need a nap or need to go to bed your mom or dad may use gestures like that to indicate they are tired.
Changes in Speech Patterns
If their speech becomes slower, more slurred, or less coherent, it may suggest they are too tired to communicate effectively.
